Main Interests

Cognitive Neuroscience (Neuropsychology/Cognitive Psychology): language processing, memory, visual cognition, cross-cultural issues.

I undertook this professional activity in 1992, at the Laboratory for Language Studies, at the Hospital de Santa Maria, in Lisbon, Portugal, assessing brain-damaged patients, while conducting research on the modulatory influence of formal schooling and literacy on human cognition. In 1995, I began collaborating with the Cognitive Neurophisiology Research Group, at the Karolinska Institutet, in Stockholm, Sweden. Ever since, my main line of investigation has been focussed on cognitive neuroscience, mainly researching, on its different levels – behavioural, functional and anatomical -, the implications of literacy / illiteracy on the human brain. The focus of this research has been aimed at both language (phonological processing) and visual systems, and the interface between them.
