Qualified Electrophysiology at the Center for Intelligent Systems (CSI)

CONC-REEQ/879/2001

The main goal of this project is to establish a state-of-the-art electroencephalography (EEG) research laboratory at the University of Algarve (UA) within the Centre for Intelligent Systems (CSI) and apply it to scientific investigations of human cognition. The CSI is a multidisciplinary research unit, including members from different scientific fields (Experimental and Cognitive Psychology, Computer Science and Physics).

EEG is a widely used research tool to investigate human information processing by measuring the electrical activity of the brain. Initially we intend to use EEG lab to investigate: 1) human cognition, including neurocognitive issues related to language and visual processing in normal subjects as well as the influence of education on the functional organization of the brain; 2) advanced methods and techniques for EEG signal processing (preprocessing, modeling and statistical inference).

The establishment of an EEG laboratory will allow the development of infrastructures for pursuing qualified scientific research and will promote advanced cross-disciplinary collaborations, providing a necessary basis for an attractive research and educational environment within UA.
